There are days where all I do is stress about work, life, deadlines, goals, etc. There are days where I feel very anxious for no reason at all. An uneasy and sickly feeling that something is wrong and there’s nothing I can do can help it. There are days when I’m triggered and go back into a depressive state that I worked so hard at suppressing.
Working out/exercising is a great way to relieve stress, anxiety and depression. When you exercise, you release a chemical called endorphins into your body which relieves pain and makes you happy!
If you’re like me, when you’re stressed or depressed, your motivation decreases immensely. Everyone says “go to the gym or go for a run”, but that’s the last thing I want to do. When I’m in these states, I feel overwhelmed and would rather curl up on the couch watching Netflix and try to get my mind elsewhere. I’d rather sleep and not do anything or see anyone. This is feeding the negativity.
About 2 years ago, I was introduced to Adaptogens by @kgmtl (a health and wellness advocate/instagram influencer). Adaptogens are basically a natural substance that help reduce stress, anxiety and depression. There are many plants, roots and herbs that have have these properties. The main 2 that I added to my diet are Ashwagandha and Maca. I try to slip in a teaspoon into my smoothies, coffees or meals once a day however I can forget at times.
Whenever I start having these negative thoughts or episodes, I whip up a tonic/concoction to make myself feel better. I instantly feel relieved, no joke. It’s like a warm hug. The tightness in my chest slowly diminishes. I feel unstoppable again and motivated to get back in the gym. I am now an adaptogen believer! Of course, you need to take these regularly to feel a bigger relief and effect on your body. I think drinking it when I’m stressed is like the placebo effect. I know that it works, I believe in it, therefore it happens instantly.
After a lot of research, I found that Ashwagandha is an ancient Indian medicine that has been used in tonics to help the old and young for a very long time. Here are a few of the benefits:

1. Bring 1 cup of water OR organic nut milk to a boil
2. Stir in 1 teaspoon of organic ashwagandha powder
3. Stir in 1 teaspoon of organic raw honey
4. Pour and enjoy
